Cultural Proficiency:  A Way of Being

Cultural Proficiency is a "way of being" that allows individuals and organizations to interact effectively with people. It is a developmental approach for addressing the issues and opportunities that emerge in diverse environments. Our life journeys have been shaped by race and culture and often influence the way we interface with others. This 3-part video workshop will provide participants with insights and tools to support increased cultural proficiency in their roles working with youth, families, and colleagues.

Cultural Proficiency: A Way of Being (Course Intro)
In Part 1, we focus on the importance of learning about and appreciating the personal, cultural identity narratives of our OST youth, families, and colleagues, and beyond.  The narratives shared in this Cultural Proficiency series utilize the  5-Cs of Identity and Awareness (color, culture, class, character, and context). Minh Nyugen shares their personal narrative and explores what it means to be Culturally Proficient in the context of the Covid-19 pandemic and the global anti-racist protests sparked by the killing of George Floyd and other black and brown people within the U.S.A..

Cultural Proficiency: A Way of Being (Going Deeper)

Building on Part 1 and 2, in Part 3 we introduce the 5 Cs of Change and Personal Action (
Confidence, Courage, Commitment, Conflict, and Community) and dig deeper to understand how anti-racism is core to cultural proficiency. Based upon issues the group identifies to tackle, the group shares practices and peer resources for creating culturally-proficient OST programs, (in person or virtual).
